Southampton District Energy Scheme
The Southampton District Energy Scheme (SDES) is based upon a successful public/private partnership delivering competitively priced energy services to businesses, households and public buildings in Southampton.

Southampton City Council (SCC) has developed a scheme in partnership with Utilicom called The Southampton District Energy Scheme (SDES). The SDES uses energy efficient Combined Heat and Power (CHP), which involves the use of a central energy plant to supply heat, electricity and cooling to a number of buildings in the area, with occupiers including John Lewis, BBC, Hammerson, De Vere Hotels, Marks & Spencer and Southampton City Council.

The scheme delivers 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission savings each year.

The Benefits of CHP
There are distinct financial and environmental advantages to the community energy scheme. The cost of heating and hot water supplied is significantly less than heating and hot water supplied by conventional systems using individual boilers connected to the mains gas supply.

Customer Benefits
Cheaper heating and hot water
Continuous high pressure supply of hot water
Cheaper cooling
Environmentally friendly image
